How to measure a year

2010.09.30. 19:01

An Australian soccer player once said (or wrote?) that a journey is best measured in friendships not in miles. Frankly, I have no idea how Tim Cahill plays soccer, I might watch an Everton match once; but in this journey thing, he was right.

I am not against traveling far, I just dislike flying, I prefer having familiar things around me, and I wish I could always take my loved ones with me. Is it too much to ask? Probably, yes. When you decide to take a journey to a different high school on a different continent, these ideas of yours go down the drain.  First of all, we fly, dreadful, then we have a difficulty understanding the world around us, and of course we leave part of family and all our friends behind us.

It is not easy to change jobs, home, in one word; life, with someone we have never seen before. Obviously, it is not as adventurous as it was for the prince to set off on the journey to kill the dragon. But still.

Very often, people ask me what this year in America was like. There is no simple answer for this question. There are stories to tell not answers. If I have to be short, I simply say, different.  It was different from here.

Atlantic City High School was very different from Radnóti in size, in its student population, int he teachers who work there, and in its educational ideas. The United States is different from Hungary, the Atlantic Ocean from Lake Balaton. Everything works in a different way.

If everything is different, how can we feel at home, how can we have a good time? Well, there is one thing though, that works in a similar way. The American way of making friends seems to be very similar to the Hungarian way. When on Father’s Day afternoon we stopped by at the family I used to babysit for almost twenty years ago, Lauren’s mother sat  in  the dining-room just as she was sitting there long years ago. Over eighty, over surviving Auschwitz, she told me in perfect Hungarian: - You can make friends anywhere.

You don’t need to travel thousands of miles to make friends. But if you decide to take a journey, it is impossible to return unchanged. When you return home, most of all you take home the memories. The memories of days spent with your new friends, the dinner spent in the No Name Restaurant in Boston, the memories of the days spent with last year’s grantee and her family, your friend’s smile from Connecticut who used to sit next to you years ago in Radnoti.

When we travel we marvel the wonderful buildings, the skyscrapers of New York and Chicago, the historic sites of Philadelphia, the pumpkin fields, the shrieking sound of the bluejay coming for the peanuts in winter, the playful squirrels in the garden, the diversity of people, the multicolor of their eyes. And we marvel how friends embrace each other the same way as in Hungary.

Whe I look back now from home, I can see that I have come a long way. But I do not measure the journey in miles. Rather in friendships. And sometimes in photos.

Inkább a barátságokban. Meg fényképekben.
